TOP TEN RURAL FAIRS OF INDIA

1. Kumbh Mela - The largest and the oldest religious gathering in the world – the Kumbh Mela is a riverside festival held four times every twelve years. Kumbh Mela

2. Sonepur Mela – Sonepur Mela - Asia’s largest cattle fair and festival is held annually in Bihar. It is a vibrant, rural fair that combines spirituality with elephants, cattle, horses and birds.

3. Pushkar Mela – Held every year at the time of the Kartik Purnima full moon, the Pushkar Camel Fair is a colorful traditional mela, which brings livestock, farmers, traders and villagers from all over Rajasthan to Pushkar.

4. Gangasagar Mela– Gangasagar Mela a big draw for hundreds of pilgrims and tourists during Makar Sankranti. It is held in West Bengal at Sagardwip, an island in the Sundarbans. Thousands of pilgrims attend this fair to take a holy dip where the River Ganges meets the Bay of Bengal.

5. Ambubachi Mela – Ambubachi Mela, also known as “Fertility Fest” or the “Mahakumbh of the East” is organized at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam. It is held every year and is a Tantrisism-influenced pooja.

6. Jonbeel mela – Jonbeel mela is a most attractive and unique festival of Assam where people gather to exchange agricultural goods without using money. At this mela, the barter system comes alive and people from different tribes come to trade.

7. Surajkund Mela – Surajkund Mela is a craft mela organized in Haryana and it showcases the richness and diversity of the handicrafts, handlooms and cultural fabric of India. A large number of national and international artists perform on open-air theatres.

8. Kila Raipur Khed Mela – Kila Raipur Khed Mela or Kila Raipur Sports Mela is held every year in Kila Raipur near Ludhiana. It is a famous rural Olympic festival and is a great draw for hundreds of sports enthusiasts, including foreigners.

9. Maund Mela – Maund mela is a yearly fish killing festival in the Tehri District of Garhwal, Uttarakhand. It is a traditional community fishing festival practiced by villagers where thousands of fish are killed.

10. Mandi Mahashivratri Mela - Mandi Mahashivratri mela is a huge fair that takes place in Himachal Pradesh to celebrate the festival of Maha Shivratri. It is an annual fair where Gods and Goddess are brought in palkis (palanquins). Mandi Town is also known as the ‘Varanasi of the Hills’.
